Seasonal Allergies: Five Ways to Reduce Symptoms Naturally

by Craig Hoffman on Friday, April 9, 2010

It is that time of year again. Spring is in bloom, lawns are being mowed, and pollen is in the air. Before the pollen-count gets too high, consider these five ways to reduce allergy symptoms without resorting to pharmaceutical drugs.

Eat local bee pollen and/or pure, raw honey

If you are familiar with the concept of vaccinations, this is Mother Nature’s all-natural, seasonal allergy vaccination. Consuming local bee pollen and/or pure, raw honey will allow your immune system to build natural antibodies to the pollens you are most frequently exposed to. Bee pollen is much more effective than honey and is also free of sugar. Be aware, honey that is not 100% raw will have limited benefits, if any. This is best to start before allergy season.

My wife makes a terrific ‘morning-shake’ with bee pollen and honey. We mix all the ingredients below into a Vita-Mix blender, but any powerful blender will do. Serves two.

  • 1 banana
  • 1 tbsp of local raw honey
  • 1 tbsp of local bee pollen
  • 1 tbsp of almond butter
  • 1 tbsp of shelled hemp seeds
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1.5 cups of AquaLiv, purified water, or coconut water (add more if too thick)

Cleanse the bowel

Truth is, most allergies, including seasonal allergies, are a result of compromised immune function. The number one contributor to a compromised immune system is a toxic bowel. Processed and cooked foods lack the key enzymes required to digest them. The result is a putrid layer of mucoid plaque that lines the bowel. Not only does this plaque prevent us from utilizing much of the nutrients we eat, but it is a constant source of toxic burden to the body. We have had more than a few customers report that illnesses and allergies they had been dealing with for years, disappeared after bowel cleansing. I used to have severe seasonal allergies myself, but they are practically non-existent now. I attribute this to bowel cleansing and drinking AquaLiv.

Two herbal products I have personally used and can recommend are Dr. Group’s Oxygen Cleanse (the first link below) and the popular cleanse by Dr. Natura. I would start with Dr. Group’s product and protocol. You can also visit a clinic for colon hydrotherapy.

Leave that nose hair where it belongs!

This one is mostly for guys, but applies to all of us. The hair in our nostrils act as a natural filter, blocking a large amount of the allergens we breathe. I’m not suggesting you stop trimming altogether, but merely trim at the opening of the nostril and leave it at that. Don’t forget to blow often during allergy season. This expels trapped allergens and hydrates your ‘filter’ for maximum effectiveness.

Try butterbur (Petasites hybridus)

This European herb has had some very impressive clinical results for allergies and hay fever. In one study recently published in the British Medical Journal, a group of Swiss researchers demonstrated that taking one tablet of butterbur four times daily controls the symptoms of hay fever just a well as a popular antihistamine drug- without the common symptoms of drowsiness. Another study showed so much promise in the area of grass pollen allergies, that the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI) gave it their stamp of approval for this purpose.

Drink AquaLiv

In our 2007 Allergy Study, 90% of participants showed a decrease in allergy symptoms when following a two liter minimum per day protocol. The study consisted of 18 participants during the Spring allergy season. AquaLiv helps eliminate toxins from the body while boosting immune strength. Many long time AquaLiv drinkers also report catching the common cold much less frequently than before drinking AquaLiv. Study results below.

  • No Change : 10%
  • Symptoms Reduced : 56%
  • Symptoms Greatly Reduced : 28%
  • Symptoms Practically Gone : 6%
