NY Times Article Tells Tap Water Truth
A recent article in the New York Times brings to light a serious problem all of us must consider. Even though our tap water may meet federal guidelines, it is still unhealthful to drink. Standards for some contaminates have not been amended since 1974 and most, if not all, no longer reflect the current scientific evidence for safe levels. Why the delay? Money. Plain and simple.
Updating the current legal levels for contaminates represents a serious expenditure for polluting manufacturers and local water treatment plants. Between government lobbyists, military officials, and in some cases even the public at large, all are protecting their pocketbook over the health of the populace. Such changes would have enough impact that one military official pronounced them ‘unpatriotic’. I respectfully disagree.
These changes, though costly, are absolutely critical. While many of us can afford our own water purification system a great many more of us cannot. The costs associated with these changes really mean less corporate profits as it is the polluters themselves who will get hit the hardest. Furthermore, investing in the water infrastructure not only protects health, but also provides jobs right here in the United States. Local municipal water systems will be challenged by new standards, but through stricter monitoring and gradual upgrades, they will succeed in doing their part in protecting the health of the citizens who rely upon them so much.
Unfortunately, this conversation does not apply only to those with municipally supplied water. Those who own private wells need to be just as concerned. This is really a conversation about environmental pollution- many municipalities get their water from wells too.
After reading the article yourself, one thing will be clear. We cannot rely on the government to provide safe drinking water or to adequately protect the environment from pollution. While we must continue to demand stricter standards for water quality and stricter regulation of polluters, we have a responsibility to act today in any way we can to secure clean, health-promoting water.
Anyone who takes their health seriously needs to take water quality into their own hands. We have many systems right here at InCleanHealth.com that can provide you and your family with quality, worry-free water for just pennies a day.
